When to schedule it in the Lowcountry
Site work can happen most of the year, but timing still matters.
- Dry spells. Grading and dirt work go best when the ground is firm. Soggy ground compacts and ruts, so we may reschedule after heavy rain.
- Before the growing season. If the end goal is a lawn, finishing grading in late winter or early spring sets up a sod install in the April through June window Clemson HGIC recommends for warm season grass.
- Cooler months for clearing. Brush and vines are easier to see and cut when growth slows, and the ground can be stabilized with sod or seed once the growing season returns.
Trees you keep deserve care during any of this. Clemson notes that the critical root zone extends at least to the dripline, the outer edge of the branch canopy. Heavy equipment and piled soil there compact the ground and cut off air and water to roots. The damage often shows up years later. We keep machines, debris and fill out of that zone where we can and never pile soil against a trunk.
