When to schedule it in the Lowcountry
Clemson HGIC notes that sod can go down almost any time of year in South Carolina, but it does best in mid to late spring or early fall. Around Charleston and Mount Pleasant that looks like this:
- April through June. The best window. Soil is warm and the grass is growing fast, so roots knit in quickly.
- July and August. Sod roots fast in summer heat but dries out fast too. It works with close attention to watering.
- September. A good second window, as long as roots have time to establish before cool weather.
- Late fall and winter. Best avoided. Dormant sod sits on top of the soil for months and is easily damaged.
Clemson recommends a soil test two to three months before planting. If you are planning a spring lawn, late winter is the time to test.
After installation, Clemson advises watering right away until the soil is wet about 4 inches down, then keeping it moist daily through the first week before tapering off as roots take hold. New sod on properly prepared soil does not need fertilizer right away. Hold off on mowing until the sod is firmly rooted.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to lay sod in Charleston?
Mid to late spring is best, and May is a strong choice because warm season grass is actively growing. Summer installs also work with careful watering. Early fall is a good second option if roots have time to establish before cool weather.
Can you lay new sod over my old grass?
We do not recommend it. Old grass and weeds keep the new roots from reaching the soil, and the material underneath can rot. Removing the old turf and preparing the soil gives the new lawn a real chance.
How long before I can walk on new sod?
Keep traffic light for the first couple of weeks while roots form. Gently tug a corner. When it resists and does not lift, the sod has rooted and normal use is fine.
Which sod is best for a shady yard?
St. Augustine is generally the most shade tolerant of the common Lowcountry grasses, and some zoysia varieties handle partial shade. Bermuda does poorly in shade. In heavy shade, thinning the tree canopy may be needed for any grass to thrive.
