The island is split between the City of Charleston, which covers about a third of it, and Charleston County, which governs most of the rest. The county and the city have kept an urban growth boundary in place since 1999 to hold back suburban sprawl, but the island has grown fast. Its population rose by half between 2000 and 2010. Seasonal tips for Johns Island yards
